What to buy, and when

A great company isn't always a great buy. Timing makes the difference.

Buying a brilliant business at the wrong price can mean months of waiting, or a loss. Here is how we judge the right moment to consider investing.

1. Is it a great company?

First, the business must pass our quality checks: steady growth in revenue and profit, healthy margins, a strong balance sheet and reliable cash flow. Most companies stop here.

2. Has the price been oversold?

A great company can still be expensive. We wait until the share price has pulled back sharply and looks oversold compared with the strength of the business.

3. Is it starting to turn?

Buying while a price is still falling can be painful. We look for signs that selling is fading and the price is beginning to turn bullish before we publish a signal.

4. Clear levels

Every signal comes with an entry price, Target 1 and a long-term Target 2, so you know the plan before you consider investing.
